In our previous blogs on corrosion you learned more about what corrosion exactly is, what forms it has and what the effect of corrosion is on your various metal constructions. One thing is clear corrosion has a negative impact on your industrial installations, which can not only be a danger to your employees but also to your business. The longer your machines are idle and your productivity drops, the more money you lose. It is therefore of great importance that your metal constructions are always protected against the causes of corrosion.

But how exactly do you prevent corrosion from occurring on your industrial facilities, and how can an experienced partner in anti-corrosion help you? You will find out all in this article on professional corrosion prevention.

Corrosion prevention explained

In short, corrosion prevention is the prevention of corrosion on your metal installations by using some efficient techniques. These techniques always depend on the type of metal used in the installations and what forms of corrosion can occur given the different weather and environmental conditions. Some metals are more sensitive than others, so a good anti-corrosion plan always starts with choosing the right metals.

Methods of corrosion prevention

There are several ways to stop or avoid corrosion on industrial structures including:

  • Removal of old and application of new anti-corrosion coatings

This isolates or shields the metal from the environment through the applied industrial coating. Important when applying an industrial coating is to provide the proper pre-treatment so that the coating can properly adhere to the metal surface or substrate. At IRIS, we have all the different surface pre-treatment techniques in house to ensure the right start for building the new preservation system.µ

  • Metallization

This is the application of a thermal sprayed coating, which can consist of a zinc-aluminum alloy, typically ZnAl (85/15%), or an aluminum layer, which we also call Thermal Sprayed Aluminum or TSA for short, typically Al (99.5%). Via a so-called thermal spray, your industrial installation receives a layer of zinc or aluminium, which not only protects it against corrosion, but also significantly extends the durability of your machines.

  • Galvanizing or hot-dip galvanizing

This is a method of using electricity to coat a metal structure with a layer of metal such as zinc, chromium or nickel. The layer of metal is applied by immersing the metal structure in a chemical solution containing zinc, nickel or chromium. An electric current charge creates adhesion between the metals.

This applied layer of galvanization can be preserved by applying a duplex system. This is the application of a wet lacquer system on top of the galvanization, which extends the life span considerably.

  • Tank coating

This is an anti-corrosion method for industrial tanks using a protective coating. In industry, certain substances such as water and chemicals are transported and stored in special tanks. To ensure that the substances are not contaminated with forms of corrosion, residues from previous loads, etc., but also that the construction of the tank remains intact, tank lining or tank coating is always provided.  This can be either an internal or an external lining or a combination of both.

Choosing Iris as anti-corrosion expert

To ensure that your anti-corrosion protection is as effective as possible and that your metal installations remain operational for as long as possible, it is best to leave your corrosion prevention to an experienced partner such as Iris.

Not only do we have years of experience and expertise, but we also have the necessary resources to protect all your metal structures from the effects of corrosion. For example, we are active in industrial cleaning and we are market leader in industrial coatings and metallization. For the removal of old coatings, we also use environmentally friendly methods such as vapor blasting and induction, which is more ecological and healthy than grit blasting.

In addition, our industrial specialists are NACE Coating inspectors, which means they all followed the NACE inspection program. NACE has been the standard for the inspection of protective coatings in the industrial sector for over 30 years. Finally, we also have technicians who are IRATA certified. This means that they hold a certificate issued by the IRATA or Industrial Rope Access Trade Association. It is a method for reaching difficult places in an industrial environment using a specific rope technique. This way they can always perform their tasks in a safe manner, even in heights.
